Business people often invest much of their time and effort networking, associating with other entrepreneurs, and brainstorming with like-minded colleagues. After all, birds of a feather flock together, and small business owners and other entrepreneurs tend to feed off of each other’s energy.
That’s important and I encourage it. But you also have to keep in mind that to significantly expand your vision you have to be influenced by those who have a broader and deeper perspective than yours. To dramatically increase your revenues you need to have role models who are already living at that higher level of prosperity. To start thinking about how to realistically take your small business and turn it into an entrepreneurial empire you have to hang out with people who have already created their own revenue-generating juggernaut.
We all know that wealth attracts wealth and that success breeds more success – but it doesn’t work unless you put yourself into a position to be associated with some of that wealth and success. That’s why extraordinarily successful individuals gravitate toward other people of exceptional talent, resourcefulness, intelligence, experience, and wealth.
To put it succinctly, would you rather quack with the ducks or soar with the eagles? Humans have a tribal nature, but it’s up to you to choose your tribal affiliation. If you want to meet ideal clients, well-heeled investors, amazing business partners, and powerfully positioned connections then you have to deliberately cultivate a social network of people capable of making those introductions. To stay informed about insightful ideas, rare innovations, and game-changing opportunities you have got to spend your time with people who thrive on the leading edge and help define the dynamic world in which we live and work.
You’ve observed people who are living your dream, and you can recognize that rarified kind of success you yearn for when you see it expressed through the lifestyles of others. Now you need to become part of their social fabric and entrepreneurial family. You can do that by being more conscious of the company you keep. Join professional associations where the membership roster is filled with people who have achieved what you desire. Volunteer with a charity whose board of directors is populated with the movers and shakers in the community. Solicit help from a mentor who is an established icon of their industry.
In biology we learn about organisms that become energized with growth through the process of osmosis, which is the transfer of molecules from a region of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration. When it comes to social interaction, osmosis means a sharing of knowledge, resources, and ideas. When you need an infusion of cash to grow your business, for example, you don’t turn to another entrepreneur who is at the same revenue level as you. Instead you go to where the wealth is greater and more concentrated.
In my own personal and professional life, for instance, I am constantly seeking out the top-rated coaches and mentors on the planet and spending as much time with them as possible. That’s because I want to ensure that my own clients derive world-class value when they come to me for guidance and training. When I’m absorbed in accelerated immersion sessions with the private coaches I turn to for knowledge and insight I know that they are the best people, with the most incredible solutions, in their areas of expertise. I am constantly bringing them new challenges. But they reciprocate by continually pushing me to stretch my creative imagination and develop bigger 360-degree vision.
When you’re surrounded by unusually successful and prosperous people you also start to emulate them, think the way they do, and feel the kind of confidence they radiate. To get to where they are they had to have crystal clear ideas, laser-sharp focus, an unyielding determination, and an exemplary Predictable Results™ mindset. That will soon be yours, too, if you simply align yourself with them in an authentic way that naturally generates mutual inspiration and rewarding reciprocity.
