Feel Like an Impostor? 5 Strategies to Reset Your Inner Monologue

“I’m not very good at closing the sale.” “I could never speak in front of a large audience, I’m too shy.” “I’m just lucky I got that new client.”  Have you ever had these kind of negative thoughts replaying in your mind?

You’re not alone…

I’ve noticed something about my coaching clients. First of all, they are very successful. They come to me because they want to uplevel their performance, not because they’re failing. However, time and time again they don’t see their true worth. Instead, they tell me they feel like a failure or an impostor. So a large part of my work, in coaching both entrepreneurs and high-level corporate executives, is teaching them to reset their inner monologue.

I like to say that the first sale you need to make is to yourself. What you say internally about yourself informs your behavior. It leaks out in how you look, act and communicate both verbally and non-verbally. If you don’t believe it, you’re not going to do a very good job convincing others. So obviously, feeling like a failure or impostor can have a negative impact on your success.

But how can you shift into a more positive frame of mind, especially if you’ve had a negative “track” playing in your mind for years? Here are five strategies to help you reset your inner monologue:

Own your success. Don’t make the mistake of telling yourself you succeeded through luck while others are more talented. Think about all the areas where you’ve succeeded. And you don’t need to limit yourself to your professional success. What about in your personal life? Are you a fantastic cook? Are you a great parent? Did you finish a 5k marathon? Dwell on ways you are a champion.

Leverage your strengths. We grow by leveraging our strengths – the things we are naturally good at doing. So don’t focus the majority of time trying to fix your weaknesses or you’ll find yourself developing a negative mindset. Instead, concentrate on unleashing your one-of-a-kind gifts and talents to catapult you to the next level in your career.

Learn from your failures. If you never fail you’re probably not pushing hard enough. Michael Jordan once said, “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.” So face your failures gracefully and most importantly learn from them and you’ll build unshakeable self-confidence.

Start your morning the right way. Every morning when you wake up, you have the opportunity to set the intentions for your day. Unfortunately most people don’t do that, and they just let life drag them around and do the deciding for them. Remember the first decision you should make each day is to adopt a positive vision for solution-oriented success this will help you face any setbacks during the day.

Repack your baggage. All of us have baggage, and it can weigh us down and hold us back. You can lighten that load by understanding your self-erected obstacles and reframing your debilitating thinking into a positive asset. Your work history, track record of coming back from setbacks or failures, and your overall life experiences all represent your baggage. Leverage what’s in there to support your journey. Successful people are not those without any flaws or unfortunate history. To the contrary, they are those who despite being human turn their wealth of experience – good or bad – and convert it into an advantage.

Does shifting your inner monologue really make a difference in your success? One of my clients, Assata Omowale, summed it up nicely when she said; “Working with Sarah helped me get my consulting business off the ground with real speed and momentum. I have seen myself grow in confidence and I’ve learned to trust my business instincts more. I now realize my own capabilities, and I value my skills and know-how, including setbacks I encountered in the past that I have managed to reframe into valuable experiences.”
