Entrepreneurs – Mediocrity or Mastery – Which Will You Choose?

Entrepreneurs are often told, “Don’t wait until you know everything. Jump in and create a business with what you have right now.” As a result, many people take that leap of faith and start their business. But a year goes by and they’re just trying to stay afloat while really going nowhere.

What’s happened? A big part of the problem is that they never fully embrace their expertise. They’re too busy stuck in doing all the small stuff. They don’t see themselves as an expert, so they haven’t consistently worked at improving themselves and growing their business as a business. They think too small and that keeps them small. Instead, I want you to expand your horizons and commit to doing one thing that you love so much that you achieve mastery in it. This is what will empower you to build a business that can accommodate your entire big picture vision.

You don’t have to wait until you know everything about your industry before you see yourself as “expert”. Realistically, nobody can expect to know everything. Yet that feeling of “I don’t know everything” is keeping so many entrepreneurs I coach from owning their own expertise. Let’s face it, while there are people who know more than you, on the flip side of the coin there are many more who don’t know as much as you do. In their eyes you are an “expert”! To be successful in your industry, you must first be an “expert” in your own eyes.

It’s true you don’t need the certificates and years of schooling to get on the road to success. But does that mean you shouldn’t pursue them? Not at all. Sometimes they’re exactly what you need in order to step into your role as Master. Something I’ve been working really hard to achieve is becoming one of the few CIM (Certified Image Masters) in the world. I know all this hard work is going to be worth it in the end.

What are some things I’ve had to do to qualify to be a Certified Image Master?

To become eligible, a person is required to be a Certified Image Professional (AICI CIP) for a minimum of 4 years. Each candidate must demonstrate that they are in demand and have offered their leadership skills within the image industry for five consecutive years immediately prior to the application, and must be able to show 2000 billable hours during that time. You have to be willing to invest close to $1000 in the application payment, so you can’t have that limiting belief – “I can’t afford it”. Even after obtaining the certification, the person has to commit to hours of ongoing education over the next three year.

Consequently, I’ve offered deep and wide services to leaders in 32 different countries. By private coaching, corporate professional development trainings, corporate consulting work, speaking, group programs, and master trainer at London Image Institute and Academy of Image Mastery, I’ve been building up a reputation that will help me achieve my goal of obtaining this fabulous status. This certification will give me the recognition and a competitive edge in the industry and also greater earning potential.

Why do I tell you this? To illustrate that you’ve got to grasp the reins and become the master of your own destiny and industry.

What do you want to master? What really excites you every day of your life? Are you willing to work hard to achieve that goal? Then follow these steps:

  • Be convinced that you have an expertise to share, because you’ve studied your industry and have been there and done it.
  • Get noticed by the media because you’ve written books and articles or podcasts that showcases your passion.
  • Always keep your ultimate goal in mind so you don’t get sidetracked and discouraged.
  • Focus your energies on creating innovative ways of serving your ideal clients.
  • Be proud to tell others of your expertise, not in a bragging way, but in a way that lets your target market see your passion for serving them.
  • Get ultra-clear on having a marketing strategy that takes your target market from an introduction clear through to a lasting, loyal following.
  • Analyze your business on a regular basis to see that it’s financially sound. Learn to maximize your resources for the best ROI. Track and measure everything you try.

Your ideal prospects and clients will accept the positioning that YOU choose for yourself and present to others. Know who you are and where you’re going to take your business. This removes the uncertainty and self-doubt so you can create Predictable Results™ in achieving mastery.

Have you settled on the one thing you want to master? If not, carve out some time this week to identify what makes you feel alive and excited.

Next, write out your ultimate goal and what you will do every day this year to achieve it and put those steps into your calendar so you can track your progress. Need to delegate? List what tasks you want someone else to do, the steps you’re going to take to pay for that help, the steps to find that assistant, and the deadline on your calendar for doing so. Need to obtain further education? List how you’re going to pay for it and when you’re going to devote time to it and schedule it.
